Until last week, the list of companies making visually stunning external hard drives began and ended with one name: LaCie. Partnered with respected industrial designers including Philippe Starck, LaCie has released more drool-worthy accessories than any other company in the Mac space — and that’s saying something. Numerous design successes led to LaCie’s acquisition by hard drive manufacturer Seagate, and at the 2015 CES, their combination bore fruit: the LaCie brand now has another beautiful hard drive called Mirror ($280), and Seagate debuted a designer hard drive called Seven ($100) — the thinnest 500GB portable drive ever made....

Marvel Comics announced the new series Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation as a five-issue run that will further explore the film’s plot threads, and include extended and deleted scenes that weren’t shown in the movie. The G-Drive has been backing up my MacBook Pro over Firewire for the past month without a fault. It is also whisper quiet which makes the chore bearable (though frankly I’ll be going back to NAS in my basement closet backups soon). As for speed, the G-Drive isn’t as fast as a 3.5 inch desktop Firewire hard drive for fast copies (1GB takes just over 20 secs.) but fast for portable drives....

I love music. I couldn’t imagine life without it, and for something which brings me so much pleasure, I’m willing to pay for decent quality. But I’ve always said that I have mid-range ears. Give me a Bang & Olufsen system in the low single-digit thousands, or something at the bottom end of the Naim range, and I’m a very happy man. Anything beyond that is wasted on me. And, indeed, for casual listening, stereo-paired HomePods hit the spot; to me, they sound way better than they have any right to at that price level....

Riot Games’ legal troubles don’t look like they are stopping anytime soon as plaintiffs in the case against the League of Legends developer have withdrawn their motion for the proposed $10 million gender discrimination settlement and retained new legal counsel. Recently, two California state agencies spoke out against Riot’s proposed settlement in a lawsuit centered around a well-publicized culture of discrimination against female job candidates and employees. California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing says that the proposed settlement amount was too low and that the women should be paid close to $400 million....

If there’s one thing every Apple commentator agrees on, it’s the trend of steeply rising iPhone prices over the past few years. Yet that’s only half true, shows one Apple analyst… Asymco’s Horace Dediu often likes to dig in deep to AAPL numbers, and he’s put together a comprehensive chart of iPhone prices from the original model right up to the present day. It’s not corrected for inflation. As a guide, he notes that the original iPhone, which launched at $600, would be $742 in today’s money, so the real-term curve would be a little flatter than shown....

Thanks to Apple’s patent on the MagSafe connectors used in MacBook Airs and Pros, the list of third-party external batteries for MacBooks previously began with Hyper’s HyperJuice/HyperJuice 2 and ended with Lenmar’s ChugPlug — not much of a variety. Apple’s legal department chased Hyper for attaching harvested MagSafe connectors to its batteries, and Lenmar chose a workaround, sending ChugPlug’s power indirectly though an Apple wall adapter. Neither solution was ideal. It took until now for a completely different third solution to appear: BatteryBox ($220) from Gbatteries Energy....
