Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen have a shared history with one another on their universes, but both have seen tragedy strike. Seeing Gwen Stacy die has understandably made Peter Parker protective when he sees a different version of her. However, the two’s shared grief ultimately made the pairs kind-of-reunion one of the sweetest moments in Marvel Comics history.
The original Gwen Stacy died in Amazing Spider-Man #121 after the Green Goblin kidnapped her and knocks her off a bridge. Spider-Man tries to save her, but his webbing breaks her neck. The moment is among the most tragic in comic history. Meanwhile, Spider-Gwen’s version of Peter was killed after injecting himself with a formula that turns himself into The Lizard. Gwen accidentally kills him and is ultimately blamed for his death. The two would work together again but under unique circumstances.
As part of 2014’s Spider-Verse crossover in The Amazing Spider-Man #11, the original Peter Parker has teamed up with Spider-Powered people from different dimensions to take down the Inheritors. He calls on the help of Spider-Gwen and Spider-Girl to help gain intel. Spider-Gwen is surprised to be picked, which leads to an incredibly heartfelt moment.
Peter apologizes for being so overprotective of Gwen, revealing he couldn’t save the Gwen Stacy of his world. Gwen responds by telling Peter that the other’s filled her in on the situation. She tells Peter she couldn’t save the Peter Parker of her world. She offers Spider-Man a deal: “What say we watch over each other?” Peter agrees, saying it “sounds like a plan.”
It had to be extremely difficult for Peter Parker to work with a different version of Gwen Stacy and vice-versa. They must both be reminded of the love they lost and the tragedy surrounding their partner’s deaths. Parker is protective of Spider-Gwen because he won’t see another version of Gwen die. While Gwen doesn’t need protecting, it’s a heartwrenching response for Peter. Thankfully, he opens up to Gwen and the two agree to watch over each other. The panel by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel remains one of the great modern Spider-Man moments. It would be nice to see the moment be revisited in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 movie.
The moment is as touching as it is moving. Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen fight side-by-side despite being reminded of their fallen friends each time they interact. Getting a second chance to see each other, even in different forms from different universes, can’t be easy. But, Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen were there for each other and had each other’s backs. Even though they come from two different universes, their connection is still incredible.
