Rick and Morty released their super meta Pringles Super Bowl ad in which Rick and Summer find themselves trapped in a Pringles commercial while watching a Pringles commercial. Rick & Morty is an animated parody of the classic 80s film Back to the Future. The show explores what would happen if Doc Brown was an alcoholic jerk who lived in his daughter’s garage. In each episode, Rick drags his grandson Morty on life-threatening adventures in bizarre dimensions like Greasy Grandma World and Buttworld. Being trapped in a Pringles commercial is not so far out of reach compared to the other dimensions they’ve been to.
The 54th Annual Super Bowl will be broadcast on millions of TV screens on Feb. 2 at 6:30 PM EST. Both of this year’s teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, haven’t won a Super Bowl in decades so a win for either would be monumental. For those tuning in for the entertainment, the Super Bowl Pregame Show kicks off at 2 PM EST featuring performances from Demi Lovato, DJ Khaled, Pitbull, Yolanda Adams, and Dan + Shay. Additionally Shakira and Jennifer Lopez are taking on the Halftime Show as the first Latinas to star in the show. Most importantly, the Super Bowl will be packed hilarious, emotional and flat out unusual ads that embody the height of capitalism.
One of the most unique and unusual Super Bowl ads will be the Rick & Morty Pringles commercial. Previously, Pringles teased the collaboration with Rick & Morty with Morty standing in front of a classroom breaking down the formula of a “three-layer dip Pringles stack,” but this is no typical Morty. This Morty has a robotic face and the Pringles logo for eyes. He stands in front of an army of these Pringles robot Mortys sitting in desks. The official commercial reveals the mission that Pringles robot Mortys were training for. Rick and Summer are sitting on the couch watching a Pringles ad. Morty enters the room holding a bundle of Pringles cans. He begins frantically preaching the wonder of the “three-layer dip stack,” and Rick responds by promptly tackling him to the ground.
Morty’s face comes off to reveal the robot face with Pringles eyes. Rick then explains to Summer that they’re trapped in a Pringles ad like he was somehow warned about. An army of Pringles robot Mortys emerge and begin force feeding Pringles to Summer and Rick. The commercial pays homage to one of the show’s most popular episodes “Total Rickall.” Rick and his family are enjoying a family meal when they are bombarded with vicious creatures in disguise claiming to be their friends. The only way to prove whether someone is real and not a creature in disguise is to recall if they share a negative memory together.
Rick & Morty’s Super Bowl ad completely embodies the spirit of the show while meeting the advertising requirements with Pringles. While it’s absurd how much money these companies pour into advertising during the Super Bowl, these commercials are more innovative than the usual uninteresting and sometimes tacky everyday commercials. These commercials gives people who aren’t sports fans something to look forward to during the Super Bowl.
