Trover Saves The Universe, the first game from Squanch Games, co-founded by Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland, will release in May 2019. Trover Saves The Universe will feature the trademark humor and animation style that has made Rick and Morty famous.
Trover Saves the Universe was first announced at PlayStation’s E3 2018 press conference as a new title from the co-creator of the hit Adult Swim animated series. The announcement came with a trailer featuring a character voiced by Roiland, Bathtub Guy. The trailer revealed the title to be an action adventure platform game full of vibrant color and the kind of zaniness that Rick and Morty fans love. The player will partner up with a purple monster named Trover who doesn’t like working for the main protagonist, which is fairly reminiscent of the same sort of relationship that Rick & Morty is famous for riffing on in each episode.
Squanch Games announced that Trover Saves The Universe will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR on May 31 and PC via Epic Game Store and Steam on June 4. According to the PlayStation Blog, players wanting to know more about the game can attend the Comedy in Games panel, hosted by Roiland, at PAX East in the Main Theater on March 28 at 4:30 p.m. EST. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty fans eagerly await the show’s fourth season. The series has been on hiatus for a lengthy period of time despite having the kind of pedigree that would usually result in quick production cycles. Fortunately, the show will reportedly return sometime this year. It’s obvious that Rick and Morty has its diehard fans, but it’s also a hit with critics as it won the 2018 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.
In the meantime, Roiland continues to work with Squanch Games, as well as on a new Hulu animated series called Solar Opposites. Trover Saves the Universe might not create a Szechuan sauce craze like Rick and Morty did, but it’s likely to cause a stir among fans of Roiland’s work. We’ll reserve judgment of the game for once people know more about its gameplay and it gets showcased a bit more heavily, but at the very least, it looks like it will mesh well with those who already like Roiland’s style.
