A new trailer for Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality brings the dimension-hopping grandfather-grandson duo to VR. Rick and Morty is making a big splash currently. On April 1st, Adult Swim shocked the world by dropping a new episode of Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s twisted and brilliant animated series. The show’s creators had been teasing the arrival of Season 3 for some time, while skillfully batting aside questions about why it was so delayed in the first place, so it was quite a nice surprise when a new episode just fell out of the blue on April Fool’s Day.
Eventually, there will be even more new episodes of Rick and Morty, more chances to get sucked into the bizarre multi-dimensional sci-fi world of alcoholic mad scientist Rick and his ever-anxiety-ridden grandson Morty. Until then, crazed fans have a chance to get sucked into that world in a totally different and potentially more immersive way, via virtual reality.
Adult Swim have released a trailer for the experience, titled Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, that previews the wackiness. You can check it out above.
Virtual reality is exactly the kind of thing they would gleefully lampoon on Rick and Morty (and Dan Harmon did mock once on Community), so the idea of a Rick and Morty VR experience almost feels like an inside joke, a self-aware angle that is played up in the trailer and no doubt the finished product. There’s little actual footage in the trailer, rather a little vignette of the duo watching an advert for the game in-universe, but it gives a good idea of the tone the creators are aiming for.
The game itself will give players the chance to experience a 3D Rick and Morty world through the eyes and hands of a Morty clone, going on adventures through portals and helping Rick with his experiments. Although not part of the main show, the puzzle game will offer a complete story with Roiland providing voice-work for his two main characters. Based on what’s shown, it’ll be full of easter eggs and obscure references for fans to pick up on - including appearances from Mr. Meeseeks and a Ball Fondlers magazine.
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is available now on Steam and Oculus, which will tide fans over nicely until the full run of Rick and Morty Season 3 begins in the summer.
