A new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker TV spot has seemingly confirmed that Kylo Ren didn’t know as much about Rey as he claimed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film will be Episode 9 of the generational, intergalactic saga. It will also serve as the third and final part of the modern Star Wars trilogy. Originally, Colin Trevorrow was signed on to direct. After he was let go, however, J.J. Abrams, who directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, returned to close out the overarching chapter. Following The Last Jedi’s highly divisive reception, The Rise of Skywalker will mark the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.

Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver return as the trilogy’s central figures, Rey and Kylo Ren, respectively. Alongside them, John Boyega returns as Finn, Kelly Marie Tran will reprise the role of Rose Tico, and Oscar Isaac once again plays Poe Dameron. Equally, Mark Hamill will reprise the role of Luke Skywalker. And despite passing away in real life before filming began, Carrie Fisher will also feature. With previously unseen footage being reworked for the new installment, Fisher’s Leia was described as the heart of the film. The end of the era that The Rise of Skywalker will represent was also reflected when Anthony Daniels asked Abrams to kill off C-3PO during the clash with a returning Emperor Palpatine.

Many questions were left Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s wake when it was released two years ago. One of the most prominent was the truth of Rey’s heritage. Shortly after turning on and executing Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo attempted to recruit Rey to his side. Part of that goal saw Kylo push Rey to confront the truth about her parents. Despite the rabid speculation and extensive fan theories, The Last Jedi seemingly confirmed that Rey was not part of an established Star Wars bloodline. Instead, Rey had come from nothing - with her parents no more than junk traders who sold her for drinking money and were buried somewhere in the Jakku desert. The latest TV spot released by Star Wars, however, further confirmed the idea that there is more to Rey’s history - and that Kylo will actually only learn of it during The Rise of Skywalker. Director Rian Johnson’s reveal regarding Rey’s mysterious backstory was met with equal applause and derision. Some fans appreciated that Rey’s power wasn’t simply hereditary and that the galaxy’s hero could emerge from any kind of background. Others, meanwhile, were actively frustrated and felt that it deviated too far from established Star Wars canon. According to Ridley, The Rise of Skywalker will also see Rey unsatisfied with Kylo’s answers. Equally, though simultaneously praising The Last Jedi, Abrams understood frustrations with the reveals. As such, many speculated that The Rise of Skywalker may see a retcon on that front.

The latest TV spot more than seems to lend credence to that idea. It remains to be seen whether Kylo Ren was lying in The Last Jedi or simply didn’t know the whole truth at the time. Whatever the case, it’s clear that he will at least learn the genuine answers. And, as seemingly one of the first to do so, he will again use it to try and get inside Rey’s head. Fans, however, will have to wait a little while longer to learn the truth and witness Rey’s satisfying emotional ending for themselves. The mere fact that there is definitely more to Rey’s story, however, will no doubt please many and fuel fresh speculation ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s release.
