The creator of Deadpool has released a sketch on social media that further connects Pokémon with the “Merc with a Mouth”, as Rob Liefeld has uploaded a picture of his own take on the title character of Detective Pikachu. Detective Pikachu is based on a video game that involves a sleuth version of Pikachu that can only be understood by the main character.
The fans had originally wanted Danny DeVito to play the role of Detective Pikachu in the movie, but the part was eventually claimed by Ryan Reynolds, who had become closely associated with the role of Deadpool. The casting of Reynolds caused the creation of a lot of Deadpool & Pokémon crossover fan works on the Internet, with many convinced that Detective Pikachu would be speaking with the same voice as Deadpool in the movie.
It seems that the creator of Deadpool wants to get in on the fun, as Liefeld has uploaded a picture of his own take on Detective Pikachu to his Instagram page. Liefeld’s version of Detective Pikachu has tiny little Deadpool faces for eyes, but is otherwise a faithful take on the character.
Liefeld explains in the description of the post that he’s excited about the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie, and that one of his kids loves Pokémon far more than Deadpool. Liefeld has also released a time-lapse video showing the sketch being created. The fact that Detective Pikachu doesn’t have human feet was also likely a huge inspiration for Liefeld’s take on the character, as he’ll infamously go to great lengths to avoid drawing the feet of his characters.
Liefeld is often criticized by those who disliked the direction that the comic book industry went in during the late 1980s and early 1990s, as Liefeld’s designs helped to form the aesthetic of the era, and he was fond of muscle-bound characters carrying huge guns and wearing numerous pouches and straps on their costume. It’s hard to deny the impact that he had on the industry, especially with his debut issue of X-Force selling over five million copies at launch, making it the second best-selling single issue of a comic book of all time.
The Pokémon franchise was also a huge deal during the latter half of the 1990s, and has only continued to grow since then, to the point where it’s now the most successful media franchise of all time, beating out the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars. Liefeld’s sketch of Detective Pikachu might seem like a light-hearted drawing made by a father to impress one of his kids and his fans on social media, but it actually represents a crossover between two of the most important media figures of the 1990s.
