Will RocknRolla 2 - AKA The Real RocknRolla - ever actually happen? Guy Ritchie’s directing career has been anything but dull, and he burst onto the scene with 1998’s Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, which also introduced the world to Jason Statham. Ritchie followed up with cult crime comedy Snatch, which was another guns and geezers romp that featured Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro. Ritchie’s career would hit some turbulence with his two follow-ups Swept Away and Revolver, though, which both suffered horrid reviews and bombed.
He bounced back with 2008’s RocknRolla and has built an eclectic filmography ever since. There was his flashy Sherlock Holmes duology starring Robert Downey Jr, period spy movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E, blockbuster King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword and Disney live-action remake Aladdin. Ritchie has made a couple of films in his career that weren’t major hits upon release, but have since built a following. One is The Man From U.N.C.L.E, which still has fans demanding a sequel, while the other is RocknRolla. The film featured a great cast, including Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy and a catchy soundtrack.
A sequel was teased at the end of RocknRolla, but over a decade after the movie came out, what are the odds of it still happening?
The Real RocknRolla Was Teased At The End Of The Original
RocknRolla ends with the title card “Johnny, Archy and the Wild Bunch will be back in The Real RocknRolla,” and Guy Ritchie confirmed he was interested in making a trilogy. A script was written for the second installment - a screenplay Ritchie later stated was “great” - while the third film apparently would have seen the Wild Bunch heading to America.
RocknRolla 2 Didn’t Happen Because Of Guy Ritchie’s Schedule
Due to Guy Ritchie following RocknRolla with the Sherlock Holmes movies and The Man From U.N.C.L.E, he became too busy to focus on The Real RocknRolla. The modest $30 million worldwide gross of the first movie probably played a role in the RocknRolla sequel being put on a backburner too.
RocknRolla 2 (Probably) Won’t Happen
Given the amount of time that’s passed since the release of RocknRolla, and the ever busy schedules of original cast members Butler, Hardy, and Elba, it’s unlikely The Real RocknRolla will come together at this point. Guy Ritchie’s next project will be Cash Truck - which reunites him with Jason Statham for the first time since Revolver - so he’ll busy for the next couple of years, making RocknRolla 2 less likely with each passing year.
