Rockstar Games has added a new piece of original artwork to their official site that resembles the aesthetic of Grand Theft Auto Vice City but with robots. With rumors circulating that Grand Theft Auto VI may bring the series back to Vice City, some have been speculating that this image could be foreshadowing an imminent reveal.
Rockstar is no stranger to using cryptic images to tease game reveals. In 2016, the company used their own logo to tease the reveal of Red Dead Redemption II. Additionally, Easter egg hunters and super-fans have found some fascinating teasers in the company’s games as well, such as Madam Nazar’s string of numbers. It’s entirely possible that Rockstar is just toying with the fervor of its audience, but it’s still fun to play along nonetheless.
The image of a golden robot caressing the Rockstar Games logo was posted to the Rockstar website “menu bank” of images, and captured more clearly on Twitter by user Yan2295. To see the image on the website, you have to refresh the menu page until it appears as it’s just one of a few that will appear.
There are several notable aspects to this image that keen-eyed sleuths have picked up on. In the bottom left, there’s a chilled bottle of champagne that’s labeled “Rockstar Games 1998” which is a reference to the company’s founding in the same year. The robot seems to be a clear reference to the famous Sci-Fi classic Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang. As for the rose petals, there doesn’t seem to be any obvious allusions, although it could just fit in with the “anniversary” theme of the image.
It’s more than likely that this image is just a cool piece of background art. However, it’s just a bit strange that the image seems to be so metaphorical, especially considering how Rockstar loves to tease its fans. Just last month, Rockstar told fans to expect GTA surprises in 2020. Although the rational majority agree that the “surprises” are going to minor updates for Grand Theft Auto V, the most optimistic of fans are holding out hope for a Grand Theft Auto VI reveal. If Rockstar Games tax reports are to be believed, which they obviously should be, Grand Theft Auto VI is in development. It’s been over six years since the original release of GTA V and it seems that fans of Rockstar Games are ready for a new iteration of the renowned best selling series.
