Someone has made a ‘Hot Coffee’ mod for Red Dead Redemption 2, and Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar would like it removed. At a glance, this situation mirrors the one which took place in 2004 during Rockstar’s original ‘Hot Coffee’ controversy, in which the company was accused of trying to slip X-rated content into their then-new game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The ‘Hot Coffee’ fiasco was surely an annoyance to Rockstar, who had previously decided not to include the content in the game on the grounds that it would probably offend the very people it ended up irritating the most. For players who do not remember, ‘Hot Coffee’ refers to a minigame which was originally planned to be included in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, one which would see the main character Carl “CJ” Johnson being invited inside his girlfriend’s house and engaging in fully-clothed, awkwardly-animated sexual relations. Although the content was locked off from being accessed during normal play, PC game modders quickly found and spread access to the risque minigame, and the resulting public fallout caused the game to be slapped with an Adults Only rating until the current copies were recalled and the on-disk content removed.
Now, it appears a similar mod has been made in Rockstar’s latest game, Red Dead Redemption 2, although the mechanics behind its creation are quite different. While the original ‘Hot Coffee’ mod for San Andreas simply unlocked animations which were created for that exact purpose by the developers from the start, the new ‘Hot Coffee’ for Red Dead Redemption 2 takes existing in-game animations and re-contextualizes them in order to make them appear vulgar. According to a recent report by PCGamesN (via PC Gamer), the creator of the new ‘Hot Coffee’ mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 said a Rockstar representative asked them to take the mod down, but they apparently don’t think they should have to.
“The mod doesn’t contain any nudity or nude models,” creator Unlosing reportedly stated. They describe the animations used as coming from the in-game mission where the player, as Arthur, gets drunk with fellow gang member Lenny in a bar, and says all of the “moaning noises are simply the sounds [character models] make when they get injured.” Currently, the mod is still available on the popular NexusMods website, which also hosts a number of mods for other games, including a battle royale mod for San Andreas.
While the internet has no shortage of XXX-rated video game mods, especially when it comes to long-running series like The Elder Scrolls, The Sims, or Fallout, Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have more experience than most companies when it comes to dealing with the controversy such modifications can bring, and it’s no surprise they would want this mod taken down before another politician accuses them of something untoward. For now, the ‘Hot Coffee’ mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 remains available, but its quite possible Rockstar is planning another course of action to have it removed soon.
