Lucasfilm has released two new videos that highlight some of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s many easter eggs. There are a lot of exciting developments happening in the world of Star Wars. After a ten year break between Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens, the movies are now coming once a year; every two years the main story - which began all the way back in 1977 - gets a new chapter, and in the years between audiences are shown a glimpse of other stories which happened “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.”
The first of these stand-alone films was Rogue One. Of course, while it’s the first Star Wars movie that isn’t focused on the saga of the Skywalker family directly, it is still a direct prequel to the first Star Wars; Rogue One ends moments before the original movie begins, with Princess Leia in possession of the plans for the Death Star and Darth Vader storming her ship to steal them back. However, the obvious narrative links throughout the movie weren’t the only connection.
Lucasfilm has released two short videos about how Rogue One connects to the rest of the Star Wars universe through its many background easter eggs. They’re short but full of trivia, and you can check them both out below.
The first focuses on direct references, including a probe droid on Jedha, the physical version of holo-chess in Saw’s camp, a reference to Rebels’ Hera and a cameo from co-writer Tony Gilroy as the Rebel communicator who helps coin the name “Rogue One”. The second went more behind-the-scenes, showing how various droids were conceptualized (K-2SO started life much closer to a standard protocol droid) and created, as well as the appearance of a prequel-era turbo tank on Wobani and a TIE Reaper snuck into the early Ring of Kafrene sequence. Many of these have been spotted before, but it’s great to see them officially cited and visualized.
As the universe continues to grow and build, especially with the upcoming standalone films (including the announced Han Solo due in 2018 and the possible Obi-Wan film), no doubt many more connections and easter eggs will be added to future films for the audience to try and find.
