Ronda Rousey is going to be the newest edition to Facebook Gaming as a streamer. This will be the first time that Rousey has entered the video game streaming scene, but several big name streamers have left other platforms for Facebook in the last several months.
Rousey has had very successful career as both a martial artist and actress. Her career took off once she became the first American woman to earn a medal in judo at the 2008 Olympic games. From there she began competing in MMA. She went on to become the first female UFC champion, and set the record for most title defenses by a woman. Rousey performed in action movies like Furious 7, before going on to become a professional WWE wrestler.
Ronda Rousey announced on Twitter today that she will now be streaming on Facebook. She states, “Game streaming is one of the most authentic mediums” and that as an avid gamer she is excited to start working as a streamer. Rousey says that she will be playing Pokemon: Sword & Shield during her first stream, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Australian bush fire recovery efforts. Those that are interested can watch on Feburary 18th at 3pm PST. While Rousey does not have a concrete schedule lined up, she mentions that she may do regular streams on Sunday or Monday mornings.
Facebook Gaming has snagged several high priority streamers recently. After not being happy with Twitch anymore, Streamer DisguisedToast left the platform to join Facebook instead. Then last December, pro Super Smash Bros. player ZeRo joined Facebook because the site offered him more opportunities than Twitch. While Facebook is not the place that most viewers think to look for video game content, it seems that the site is doing a really impressive job of growing its collection of content creators.
Ronda Rousey is a very big name for Facebook to acquire. Despite Rousey working with video games before, she may not currently have any fans in the streaming industry. Someone like Rousey though will most likely bring MMA or WWE fans to Facebook Gaming that would have never have signed up for the platform beforehand. This is a tactic that the newly formed streaming site Caffeine used when they signed Drake up for a multi-year contract. With her amount of fans and the backing of a powerhouse like Facebook, Ronda Rousey has the potential to become one of the next big things in streaming.
