Michael Rooker is probably best known as Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead, but his current role in the Marvel universe is set to eclipse that this summer, thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Rooker joined the Marvel universe for 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as Yondu. A blue-skinned, arrow-controlling space pirate, Yondu raised Star-Lord (Peter Quill), and will be joining his pseudo-son’s ragtag team in the sequel.
Although the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still a few weeks away, fans are already looking to the future of the space-faring superheroes, with the news that director James Gunn will return for the third volume in the series. Many of the stars will also be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, although the details of which team members will show up are not yet confirmed. Now Rooker has also been talking about who else he would like to see join the MCU, and a fellow Walking Dead co-star is at the top of the list.
In an interview with ComicBook, Rooker revealed that he would love to see The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus join him in the Marvel universe, saying that they make a great team, and even joking about Reedus having to leave his character Daryl Dixon’s signature weapon behind.
Reedus is, of course, still a big part of The Walking Dead – unlike Rooker, whose character was killed off in the third season of the show. In the time that both were on the series, the two had plenty of scenes together, as they play brothers: Merle and Daryl Dixon.
“I think me and Norman would make a great team… You don’t need bows in space.”
Reedus would certainly be a fan favorite as an addition to the MCU. As one of the main characters on The Walking Dead, he has amassed a huge fan base, and certainly has experience with both a major franchise and the action-adventure genre. And, of course, there are still hundreds of Marvel characters who could one day make it into the massive expanded Marvel universe. Seeing Reedus and Rooker team-up again on the big screen would be a phenomenal pairing.
However, it’s important to remember that this is not in any way a confirmation that Reedus will be joining the MCU any time soon. As a star of The Walking Dead, it’s unlikely that he’ll be taking on any major film projects until he is done with the series – or becomes a smaller part of it, in order to have the time to work on more things. Rooker’s comments are also quasi-joking, and only represent who he thinks it would be fun to work with, not who he is planned to work with in the future.
The Walking Dead is slated to return in October.
